Jeffreys Wins Whelen 100 With Controversy

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Robert Jeffreys may be over 60 years old, but he showed on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium that he can still run with the best of them. Jeffreys, a resident of Winston-Salem, took checkered in the Whelen 100, the second 100-lapper of the season for the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series.
The 100-lap races have their starting lineup determined by random draw – and new this year, they have a double-file “choice” restart procedure as well. The 100-lap races are recipes for exciting racing action at Bowman Gray Stadium, and the Whelen 100 was no exception.
The race started off with pole-sitter Luke Fleming of Mt. Airy claiming the lead by getting the jump on outside-pole-sitter Bobby Hutchens of Lexington. But a few laps later, Fleming briefly lost traction, allowing Hutchens to slip to the inside and make a clean pass for the lead.
Hutchens began to pull away from the field, dominating the action for the first half of the race – which was without a caution. But the clutch of Burt Myers broke on lap 68, bringing out the caution and forcing Myers to pit
With a double-file restart brought about by Myers, Hutchens had to protect his lead from challengers from the outside row. Junior Miller of Danbury, who was in fifth place, was the first competitor to choose the outside lane – putting him in the outside front-row beside Hutchens. Hutchens was able to defend his lead. Miller moved back to second.
But Hutchens was not so lucky on lap 78: After another caution and another restart with Miller on the outside front-row, it was Miller who beat Hutchens into turn one to claim the lead.
It wasn’t long though before the #14 car of Hutchens was delivering some stout taps to the rear bumper of Miller. With another caution, Hutchens went to the outside to try and reclaim the lead from Miller. He was unsuccessful.
Miller continued to hang onto the lead despite some hard nudges from Hutchens. There were times when Miller almost lost control due to the taps of Hutchens, but he was able to regain control. A few laps later though, a tap from Hutchens sent Miller spinning in turn four. Hutchens took the lead.
Robert Jeffreys assumed second place and began hammering the bumper of Hutchens. It seemed that Hutchens could handle Jeffreys – and with only two green flag laps left, Hutchens seemed to be cruising to victory.
Unfortunately for Hutchens, Junior Miller was still upset about their earlier encounters. Miller slowed down to wait on Hutchens to lap him – and then Miller drove Hutchens into the wall.
Hutchens’ misfortune was good luck for Robert Jeffreys. Jeffreys took over the lead and went on to win. “You’ve got to be in the right place at the right time,” said Jeffreys. But luck wasn’t everything – during the last two laps, Jeffreys did have to defend his lead from Tim Brown.
“Tim isn’t going to take you out. He’ll beat on you – but that’s what you have to do over here,” said Jeffreys. “But if you’ve been over here as long as I have, you ought to know what you’re doing.”
Tim Brown of Cana, Va. finished second. Alfred Hill of Jonesville finished third.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kenny Bost of Kernersville took checkered in the first race with Kyle Edwards of King finishing second and Jim Shoaf of Lexington finishing third. In the second 20-lap race, Rookie Steven Berrier claimed his first win of the 2008 season. David Adams of Yadkinville took second with Mike Evans of King finishing third.
Ryan Nelson of Winston-Salem won the 20-lap race for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Tim Vaden of Kernersville finished second with Ethan Stoltz of Walkertown taking third.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Matt Hill won the first 15-lapper with Andrew Sanders winning the second 15-lapper.
