| Double Points Night Shakes Up Points at Bowman Gray | (Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Double Points Night. Merely mentioning the words gets drivers’ stomachs churning and their adrenaline pumping. In the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series, Tim Brown of Cana, Va. took victory in the first race on Saturday. Brown qualified on the pole for the fifth time in 2008 and dominated the field during the race. “This was a good night for us,” said Tim Brown. “This car was really hooked up.” Brown finished 7th place in the second race, keeping him in the points lead. Bobby Hutchens of Lexington was able to finish fourth and fifth, keeping him relatively even with Brown. Burt Myers of Walnut Cove, however, was the one who faired the best on Double Points Night: two third place finishes move Myers up to second place in the points – tied with Hutchens. Lee Jeffreys of High Point, although the winner of the second Modified race, slipped down one spot on the points ladder: from fourth to third. Jason Myers of Walnut Cove rockets from ninth in the points to fifth. Robert Jeffreys of Winston-Salem, who was plagued with mechanical problems, falls from fifth in the points to 11th. Saturday was especially important for the competitors in the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series. Not only was it a Double Points Night, but it was also the Baity Tire Sportsman 100 – the longest and most prestigious race of the season for the Sportsman Division. With every driver vying for the points, the purse, and the bragging rights, the stage was set for an exciting race. Jim Shoaf of Lexington was the man to envy on Saturday. Shoaf started on the pole and went on to take the checkered. But it was far from an easy task for Shoaf. “100 laps is a long way around here, especially if you look up and see Tommy Neal in your mirror,” said Shoaf, referring to Tommy “the Tiger” Neal of Walkertown. Neal ran most of the race right on the bumper of Shoaf, challenging Shoaf on several restarts and delivering a good tap or two to Shoaf’s bumper for good measure. Shoaf held on to win, moving from 11th to 7th in the points. 2007 Sportsman Champion Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown takes the points lead after finishing fifth. Kenny Bost of Kernersville, who finished sixth, drops from the lead down to second in the points. But with Bost only one point behind Clifton, the race is about as tight as it can get. In the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series, Ryan Nelson of Winston-Salem finishes second, keeping him in the points lead. Tim Vaden of Kernersville, who took checkered on Saturday, moves up to second in the points. David Sumner of Trinity slips from second in the points down to third. Sumner was leading the race until a tap from Vaden sent him spinning. Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall and Matt Hill of Yadkinville are tied for the points lead in the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series after finishing fourth and second respectively. Kernersville resident Wayne Hill’s fifth place finish moves him up to third in the points. Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville, who held the points lead entering the event, was taken out of the race early – dropping him down to 10th in the points. This Saturday night is the Craftsman Stadium Stock 50, the longest race of the year for the Stadium Stock Division. There will also be racing for the Modified, Sportsman, and Street Stock Divisions – and as a special added attraction, the Southeast Mini Cup Series will race. Ticket gates open at 6 PM for practice runs, qualifying is at 6:00 PM, and the first race is at 8:00 PM this Saturday night.
