| NASCAR Rainouts 4, Whelen Southern Mods 3 | by Skip Wall So the Lord said let there be rain, and so it rained on Noahs Ark for some forty days. It wasn’t quite like that however it did rain very hard for some forty minutes at Caraway Speedway this past Friday and the race went out with a July 4th bang, once again, for the scheduled 150 lap Whelen Southern Modified Tour race.
It was the fourth such rainout this season. So now it puts only three races run this season and four more have been rained out. Officials havnt decided if or when a rain date will be made up, however, sources say they are looking at a September 6th date as a possible makeup.
Only about half the field of 25, had qualified when the rains came. In fact, Jay Foley was taking his qualifying lap and spun into the first turn wall when the rains hit the .455 speedway, run by Russell and Renee Hackett. Foley was uninjured and was able to drive away.
It was a very unlucky day for driver Burt Myers. The Walnut Cove NC native blew an engine during the practice session and had to return home to his shops and retrieved another car. He got back to the track just after it started raining.
It was about as fierce as a storm could be at the famed track in Asheboro NC. In fact, series director, Mark Suddreth said a similar storm of this nature passed thru when he was with the now defunct Goodys Dash Series.
During the first forty minutes it had very severe lightning and nickel size hail. The infield pit road clogged up with 18 inch deep water. The weigh scales were covered up with water. Two tables used by NASCAR floated off, much to the amaze of officials. Moreover flooding caused some cars to stalled getting out of the speedway. It rained so hard that it was hard to see the backstretch wall.
Later one crewman was seen running along pit road and taking a dive under water.
Officials waited an hour and half to call the race. A power outage on the front stretch, the concession stands and the press box, prompted track officials to call the race.
The series now moves to the legendary Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem NC for a August 2nd event, The Advance Auto 199.
And the final score this week? NASCAR Rainouts 4 Whelen Mods 3.
