| Hirschman Wins Josh Jenkins Memorial in Sizzler | by Skip Wall
First it was Ronnie Silk that was taking the Frost Bite Winter National and making it look like a Spring Sizzler, however it was Matt Hirschman that stole the show this past Saturday at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont NC.
Hirschman of Northampton Pa. took the lead from Silk with less than 8 laps to go in winning the ASA Southern Modified series season opener.
“I don’t know how we did but we had the power and handling to get him there at the end” says a smiling Hirschman who has no ride lined up for this year after this race.
“This win here will open some doors up that’s for sure.”
Silk had started on the pole and led the most laps until a late race incident cost him the victory.
While battling for the lead with George Brunnhoelzl, Silk got into the back of a lapped car sending several cars into the first turn wall. That caution bunched the field back up and it was Hirschman that overpowered Silk for the win.
Silk would finish second, while Charlie Pasteryak was third, followed by Brunnhoelzl and late entry J.R. Bertucio.
It was a letdown for Silk, fresh off a huge win from New Smyrna, The Richie Evans Memorial, during Speedweeks.
“It’s a big loss for us but it is what it is” said a dejected Silk.
“I knew Brunnhoelzl was coming hard but the 42 (Tony Hanbury) could have moved out the way and let us go. But I got into a slower car and it shoved him high. Didn’t mean to but that’s racing. I hate it for Brunnhoelzl though. As far as Matt, he just beat me.”
The race saw only four cautions and four different leaders during the 125 green flag laps event.
Silk, Hirshman, Brunnhoelzl, Pasteryak and Jimmy Zacharias kept the fans up and down as they battled for the lead throughout the race.
Beautiful weather conditions brought out a nice crowd ending cabin fever for many that saw 18 cars start the race.

The ASA Southern Modified Race Tour now moves to a May 9th event at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway Va.
